Because in any project, the step that is invariably skipped is the ground work.
We all like to launch into projects, but sometimes taking the first part slowly and covering your bases – which comes through experience of just doing
but with all problems, stepping back a step or stepping outside of the project, lets you see the glaring omissions or gaps in a way that forging ahead rarely does

if you can’t work on the story
what about doing the character bible?
that often will lead to subplot development
